5/11/2008 Deselect Features to Uninstall? Huh?
Just Installed Windows XP Service Pack 3
5/9/2008 Out-of-Office MessagesI came across the following "out-of-the-office" messages on this site, on my free time at work of course, and I decided to share it with you:
HTC Diamond TouchFLO 3D Preview
5/6/2008 Live.com Reloaded!
I love the color scheme. Fits well with Vista users as well as all Windows Live members. This will definitely be my homepage for quite a while. There is probably a lot of different changes under the hood so I will make sure to check it out. If you're a long time Googler like myself, then you certainly won't regret test driving this beauty. You never know, you might actually make the switch. Ciao for now! 4/29/2008 Goodbye iPhoneYup, it's time to let go the blonde. It has been one heck of an experience, but not everything has good endings. The iPhone is pretty, smooth, revolutionary, and is a key product for Apple. But I just couldn't get over the fact that it is restricted and imprisoned by dozens of rules and formats forced by Apple. As I said in my previous blog, sometimes I don't feel like I own an iPhone, instead I feel like Apple owns me.
I found myself buying a lot from iTunes just to avoid all the pain and hassle of converting my videos and music collections so that it could sync with iTunes (which I believe is a major concern and Apple should be sued for it). Plus, I couldn't log on MSN since there isn't a client application out there yet (instead I had to use the battery draining meebo web application and others alike. I couldn't send emails from my Windows Live Mail account using iPhone's native Mail client (I managed to only receive them). And I couldn't sync my contacts or calendar with my Windows Live Mail contacts and calendar, respectively.
And guess what? I can do all that (and more) with my Nokia E61 (except syncing calendar events).
The only thing I will miss the most is the web browsing experience. Nothing on the market so far comes close to the iPhone's web browser. On the other hand, I know that Microsoft is working on a new Pocket Internet Explorer that should be generations better than the current one shipped with every Windows Mobile device. Also Opera has a new browser (Opera Mobile 9 in the works) which can be considered a potential competitor to the iPhone's Safari browser.
Nevertheless, this is a unique device with a tremendous amount of potential (iPhone 2.0 is soon to be released with new features) but comes short when it comes to features and usability for power users. (at least in my opinion). 4/27/2008 New Technologies from Microsoft Research
It's Time To Breakup With The BlondeAnd by saying "blonde", I mean my iPhone. I had fun playing around and using the phone but it's time to get a "real" smartphone. A device that I can store and backup files to. A device that I can drag-and-drop files to without worrying about file formats and compatibility. A device that I can wirelessly send files to another device through bluetooth. A device that lets me set my own ringtone. A device that lets me copy and paste. A device that sets me free for God's sake!
I am sick and tired of all the bull shit restrictions that Apple included in the iPhone. Sometimes I don't even feel that I own this phone, instead Apple owns me. I can't transfer any kind of video file to my phone because it has to follow specific rules and formats supported by iTunes. So I have to go through all the trouble of decoding and converting either music or video files so that I can sync it to my iPhone through iTunes. And most of the time it doesn't work. It's Apple's way of forcing everyone to buy music and video off iTunes. Don't you think they should get sued for doing that?
It's time to free myself from all the restrictions and limitations that was forced into my digital mobile life ever since I owned an iPhone. It's time to let it go.
Screw Apple, and screw its iPhone!
I am switching to Windows Mobile. Now that's a mobile operating system that certainly makes you the boss of your phone! It's just a matter of choosing the right device with the right features. 4/24/2008 UFC 83 MontrealIt might be a couple of days late to blog about this but I am doing it anyways. The Bell Centre in Montreal was filled with more than 21,000 UFC fans and their cheers filled the air and rocked the stadium. Those people were so pumped up, including yours truely, and we all couldn't wait to see GSP fight Serra. But we knew they would save the best for last. After 8 great fights between popular fighters, it was time for the main event that everyone came for. First, GSP showed up and that's when everyone stood up cheering the Canadian fighter. And when Serra came out the crowd didn't show much appreciation. The fight started and GSP seemed to be on top of Serra all the time. As a matter of fact, he completely dominated the fight giving Serra zero chances to fight back. The fight ended with a knockout from GSP. The joy and satisfaction from GSP's victory felt overwhelming and I am pretty sure anyone in the streets of Montreal could hear the crowd within the Bell Centre. I almost lost my voice from all the yelling and cheering. In the end, the experience was unbelievable and totally worth the wait. It certainly beats watching it on TV. 4/21/2008 Montreal - Night Before UFC FightA while back, my generous boss decided to take us all to the first UFC fight in Canada held at Bell Centre in Montreal. While the tickets and the hotel booking was paid by my boss (a million thanks) I have to obviously cover my personal expenses. The one hour flight from London (Ontario) to Montreal (Quebec) was comfortable and trouble-free. After we landed and checked in the hotel, we left and took a cab downtown Montreal where all the action takes place. I honestly haven't seen that many people in several streets walking and making a lot of noise in Canada. There were hundreds of bars and clubs, restaurants and cafes, limos and cabs concentrated in several streets. And the traffic seemed to get worse as time passes by. And believe me, time does fly by so very quickly in downtown Montreal on a Friday night . So anyways, after we had our share of fun, entertainment, meals and drinks we headed back to the hotel at around 1:30 AM. So far so good. Note: This post was originally typed on April 18, 2008. 4/10/2008 Microsoft Office Live vs Google DocsI am not sure if Microsoft Office Live is trying to compete with Google Docs, but what I know for sure is that I wasn't totally impressed. Don't get me wrong, having such a service is always appreciated especially when it ties in with Office 2007 in terms of syncing documents. Plus it's free of charge. But Office Live still has a long way to go in order for me to see a competition against Google Docs. On the other hand, Google Docs immediately impressed me right off the bat with their simple, user friendly and responsive interface. They have most, if not all, the tools I ever want to use when it comes to creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations. And it's all available on the web free of charge. That's when I started searching for Microsoft's answer to Google Docs and found about Office Live. You might think I am leaning more towards Google Docs, but those who know me know that I stand by Microsoft's products and services. And as soon as I knew about Office Live I immediately added it to my favorites and I am confident that I will be using it often. Better yet, I even started sending feedback filled with suggestions and feature requests that in my opinion will further improve and promote the service. But the thing that bugs me is the way the Live Services team tends to widen the gap between some of their Live services. I mean, we're all familiar with the commonly seen Windows Live bar with the quick shortcuts to Home, Hotmail, Spaces and OneCare. But what about SkyDrive, QnA, and Office Live? And even though they were still in beta, shouldn't they allow more people to use those new services in order to get more feedback by giving users quick shortcuts to the services? After I visited the Office Live site, I didn't know if it's part of the Windows Live services or is it a standalone online service. If it's a standalone service, then why put a "Live" label on it? And if it's part of the Windows Live services, then why does it not have the Windows Live bar at the top, and why doesn't it follow the same look and feel of the other Windows Live services? I don't know why, but Microsoft got me used to leaving me confused with any new service it launches in beta. You know something, sometimes I wish I was part of the Live team in order to share and work with them on some of my ideas which I am confident will help improve the commonly used and new Windows Live services. But all I can do in the meantime is wish. 4/7/2008 My iPhone AddictionI can't seem to put my iPhone down! Is it really a bad thing to be addicted and so much connected to your phone? I mean, it's not like I make a lot of phone calls (anyone who knows me knows that I am not much of a chatter box). I don't know, there is certainly something different about this phone than all the others I previously owned. I can't believe I am about to say this, but I think I am beginning to be quite attached to my iPhone. Don't get me wrong, it won't totally replace my Nokia E61 yet, but it certainly does certain things a lot better and faster. And in a more elegant way, as most Apple products do (if not all). But I can admit and say it out loud that this phone is special to me. The way it looks and feels. The way it automatically rotates without a press of a button. The way all instances are connected and communicates seamlessly with one another. It's certainly a beautiful revolution wrapped in an elegant and classy package for everyone to admire. I got to be honest with you. Before I got my iPhone, I was constantly annoyed by all the fuss and popularity a single phone, the iPhone, had. I started telling myself not to be carried away by the media frenzy. And it did work, for a very short period of time. Until I started to wonder if the iPhone really deserved all that. And it was clear to me that there was only one way to find out. I had to get my hands on it and see for myself. As soon as I received the package and took the phone out of the black box, it immediately blew me away. It's unlike any cellphone I used. Everything about it was completely different than anything I have experienced. And that's when I realized how unique and special this device is and will always be. The bottom line is: I don't care if I got addicted or attached to my iPhone. I am proud of owning such a revolutionary device. The experience alone is worth the long wait and every cent put into it. Ladies and gentlemen, this post was typed on my iPhone. __________________________________________________________________ Get a sneak peak at messages with a handy reading pane with All new Yahoo! Mail: http://ca.promos.yahoo.com/newmail/overview2/ 4/3/2008 Windows Mobile 6.1You should have heard by now that Microsoft officially announced the new updated version Windows Mobile 6.1, only for smartphones. Which means that all touch screen devices will still be running Windows Mobile 6 Professional. I think there is a reason why touch screen devices still run the older version. I think Microsoft is planning on releasing a totally revamped Windows Mobile for touch based devices. Maybe something that can actually compete with the iPhone. Everyone knows that technology is moving towards touch based applications and gradually moving away from hardwares such as the mouse and keyboard when it comes to using everyday applications specially on mobile devices. So it would make sense if Microsoft is working on something powerfull in their labs. As for the time being, Windows Mobile 6.1 looks great and comes with many new useful features. Windows Mobile is defintely going in the right direction, as it seems, and I will be looking forward for more news from the dev team. __________________________________________________________________ Looking for the perfect gift? Give the gift of Flickr! http://www.flickr.com/gift/ 4/1/2008 Free iPhone WallpapersI came across this site, http://www.320by480.com, while reading an article on some iPhone blog. The site has great quality wallpapers made specifically for the iPhone's screen size. The wallpapers are categorized under numerous genres for easier navigation. It's always great to find sites that offer free stuff but it would have been better if the site was optimised to be viewed on an iPhone since it is meant to serve iPhone owners. That being said, it's a great site with lots of free iPhone wallpapers. The only drawback is that you have to save the images first on your computer then sync them to your iPhone using iTunes in order to set it as a wallpaper. Maybe there is a free application out there that lets you automatically download and set a certain wallpaper on the web right on your iPhone. Or maybe this is just another great idea for a potential application to be made available on the ever so popular iPhone Installer. __________________________________________________________________ Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. Go to Yahoo! Answers and share what you know at http://ca.answers.yahoo.com 3/30/2008 What does today's software lack? What gets people's attention in the beginning is the interface and the overall look and feel of any software (either a client or web application). But after that first impression, what comes next? Does the experience end there? Currently most software development companies focus on a couple of areas which includes the application's features and ease of use. But what's unfortunate is that's where the development ends. And once a user gets used to the software's interface and features, the wow factor ends. So what's missing here? How can the software development companies keep that wow factor and make users coming back for their products and not just that but also keep the company name in their minds? What software lacks is the seamless and fluid interaction between the user and the software. Applications needs to reflect what people experience in real life in order for the user to feel connected to it. For instance, when you change a view on a current window by clicking on a different tab, the window immediately changes and gives you the options available for tab selected without giving the user the feel that he/she are changing views. Now in real life, when a person wants to look at another direction he moves his head from one position to another. We need to implement what happens during that head movement into our software. Therefore, when changing views to another tab, for instance, we can slide the window from one side to another. What we need is proper transitioning from any instance to another. Windows Vista has added a couple of these transitions into the operating system (minimizing and restoring a window, tabbing or switching between open windows/applications, opening and closing windows/applications). But it still doesn't cover all aspects of the operating system's core functions especially when you open up certain options like the Display Properties or the Mouse Properties under the Control Panel. When it comes to human interaction with computers, it deserves to pay a lot attention to what humans naturally want to see or experiencein real life. 3/22/2008 iPhone: Installing ApplictionsInstalling applications on any Windows Mobile device is a breeze. You download or transfer a CAB file to your device, run the file, choose where to install the application (whether on the device's memory or on a storage card), and simply follow the instructions on screen. There is absolutely nothing complicated about the process. On the other hand, Apple made it impossible for iPhone users to install a single application (as of yet). But of course thanks to hackers there is always a way around this issue. But it won't be easy. And it will be risky. Some users even ended up with a dead iPhone. That's why all the tutorials online on this matter mention the following before the guide begins: "Do this at your own risk." The workaround is called 'jail breaking' your iPhone. A simple Google search will give you the information you need. But be aware that each firmware might have a different jail break process. So make sure to check what firmware your iPhone is running prior to attempting anything. After the jail break, you will be able to add an application called 'Installer' to your iPhone where it will give you access to hundreds of iPhone applications. But you will be facing another problem. The iPhone's memory is split into two partitions. One holds 300Mb (used for system files) and the rest is for your media files (iTunes music, photos, etc). In order not to run into problems, you need to configure your iPhone in a way that it installs the applications on the second partition. Again, a simple Google search on this matter will help. I told you it won't be easy. Luckily, you can get an unlocked and jail broken iPhone off ebay to save yourself a lot of pain and agony. 3/21/2008 Windows Mobile: Silverlight & Flash SupportNow that Microsoft seems to have got its Windows Mobile team working again, it brings me pleasure to hear such great news as the added support for Silverlight and Adobe Flash. This definitely will enable developers to get a lot more creative in developing state of the art applications for Windows Mobile using Silverlight since the technology is cross-browser and cross-platform. And with Adobe Flash supported as well, bringing a more realistic desktop-like internet experience to a Windows Mobile device doesn't sound far-fetched anymore.
But I think there is more up Microsoft's sleeves behind this news than just for the sake of software development and better internet experience. I think it has to do with Windows Mobile's successor. That's right. Windows Mobile 7.
Now that everything is moving towards a touch based experience for mobile devices, the added support for Silverlight might be a clue of what to expect from the next version of Windows Mobile. And I don't mean Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5, but instead an entirely overhauled operating system. After all, Silverlight is all about UI and Windows Mobile users all around the globe have been complaining and giving negative feedback on the OS's not so user or finger friendly interface.
It will be interesting to see what the Windows Mobile team will be releasing in the upcoming months. You never know, maybe a new Windows Mobile version isn't so far away as everyone seems to believe. But no matter how long it takes, I am sure it will be worth the wait. Windows Mobile: HTC TouchI am not trying to write a review of the phone here since it's been done all over the net (just Google 'HTC Touch review' and see for yourself). Instead, I am just pointing out my likes and dislikes of the device. First of all, I have to admit that I like the device's form factor. Small and thin enough to fit in your pocket and at the same time the screen is big enough to view and take pictures as well as read the latest news using your preferred RSS reader (I use and recommend Viigo). The HTC Touch rubberized body gives it a nice feel and gives it a lot more grip. I didn't find it hard using the device for calling with one hand, although it did get a bit tricky when trying to type a message or a web address with the built in virtual keyboard using only your finger. That's when the stylus comes handy. It comes with a loud speaker which can be used as a speakerphone during a call as well as listening to music. The one major disadvantage is the memory. The phone seems to always complain about low program memory. I guess that's why HTC had to make a second generation HTC Touch with improved application memory capacity. Nevertheless, the phone is sleek and practical for daily use with a great battery life. Besides, the phone comes with a nice good quality pouch to protect the screen and the body from any bumps and accidental drops (something the Apple people should have considered including with their precious and ever so popular iPhone).
iPhone vs HTC Touch: IncomparableMy boss and I decided to exchange cell phones for the long weekend. So I got the HTC Touch and he got the iPhone. I have previously owned a Windows Mobile 6 Professional device (HTC Advantage 7501) so I know my way around the operating system, the only addition is HTC's TouchFLO. Honestly, it's one of the many missing pieces that Windows Mobile desperately needs which is some way to make the interface intuitive and a lot more finger friendly. But once you get out of the TouchFLO experience, it's back to good old Windows Mobile again. And even though Windows Mobile allows running multiple applications, the HTC Touch can't seem to handle it because of its small memory. The thing that is totally noticeable about the iPhone is the simplicity. All tasks are simple, straightforward, and without a single complexity. Even if you have never used a cell phone before there is no doubt that you will immediately get the hang of it. Honestly, a freakin' monkey would certainly know his way around it in a jiffy. There is barely any advanced options. You can only use one application at a time. Everything is so strictly imprisoned by the Apple people and any change to the system files (which can only be accessed through SSH on a jail broken iPhone) would pretty much either crash the OS or permanently lock it for ever and ever. In other words, it's certainly not intended for power users such as myself. Apple wants you to be a good boy and only use what you see on screen. Period. But the truth has to be told. There is no phone that does those simple tasks as well as the iPhone. Windows Mobile cannot be compared (it's way off the chart). Nokia's Symbian OS is also generations behind. And, from the looks of it, Google's Android still lacks the finger friendly and intuitive UI. So if you're someone who is only interested in a phone that sends & receives calls & messages, as well as a built in iPod, and an internet mobile device for surfing (not chatting...yet), then by all means get yourself a glossy shiny iPhone. Oh and don't forget to get yourself a case for it since it doesn't come with one. Oh and a small cloth to clean the screen after every use. Oh and a screen protector. Oh and a pair of gloves so you don't get it smudged. Oh and...no I think that is pretty much it.
3/19/2008 iPhone: iTunes Missing Album ArtThis doesn't happen all the time, but I thought I would mention it anyway. Today, I clicked on the iTunes icon on my iPhone to check out the top 10 in numerous genres. I noticed the album arts are not loading. I kept going back and forth and flipping between genres but that didn't seem to solve the issue. And since there isn't a refresh button I decided to quit the application and start it up again. Still, that didn't do the trick. Some genres seem to display the album art with no trouble but some don't. So what's the deal here? So I left my iPhone for a while after turning OFF wifi. When I came back to it after a couple of hours, turned wifi ON, and sparked up iTunes, the album art now seems to be showing fine. So was this an issue on the iTunes server side or was it an iPhone bug? Or was it a connection issue from my side? We may never know. But still, it's a strange issue that I thought was worth mentioning. After all, it has something to do with the iPhone.
3/18/2008 iPhone: Not Responding & Black ScreenBefore I slept last night I plugged in my iPhone to get it recharged. I woke up today morning and pressed the home button to check for any messages and the phone wouldn't wake up. Nothing seem to respond. After searching for answers on the net I found out that a quite number of users had the same problem and some of them posted a workaround. What I had to do is download and install and application called ZiPhone and connect it to my iPhone while it's in recovery mode and click on Normal Mode (which is located under Advanced Features). That pretty much did the trick. I just hope that I don't have to keep doing this often. Looking for the perfect gift? Give the gift of Flickr! http://www.flickr.com/gift/ 3/16/2008 Coming Up: iPhone PostsThere is no reason for me to mention the advantages of iPhones since everyone knows how cool they are and how their user interface beats anything currently in the phone market. Instead, I will be mostly talking about the disadvantages of owning an iPhone and comparing it to other mobile devices I owned in the past. So far, I can honestly mention at least 5 features that the iPhone lacks which is available in mostly all recent mobile devices. But I won't get into it now as I am feeling a bit tired and in need of some serious rest. Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. Go to Yahoo! Answers and share what you know at http://ca.answers.yahoo.com The Wait is Finally Over, Say Hello To My iPhoneSo the package I have been waiting for four weeks to arrive finally showed up on my doorstep and it had my long awaited iPhone in it. I am still playing around with it trying out every feature and every detail. So it might take me a while to post on my experience with the iPhone. There is definitely pros and cons when comparing it to other devices and mobile operating systems such as Symbian and Windows Mobile. But so far I like what I see.
3/14/2008 Follow-Up #2: Shipping With USPS SucksIt's the fourth week and I still haven't received my package yet. Honestly I believed that this will be the last week I spend waiting. Now there is only one day left till the end of the fourth week and the chances for the package showing up tomorrow before next week is pretty slim. On the bright side, USPS did update the tracking information on their website. Here is the latest reading:
Detailed Results:
So now I know the package is FINALLY released from customs but no idea on the exact whereabouts. This is certainly by far the longest time I had to wait for a shipment coming from the States. For God's sakes, the origin of the shipment is just eight hours away from where I live! It would have been faster if I picked it up myself. And you know what the worst part of it all? The shipper told me that he upgraded the shipment to Priority Service and I should be getting it in two to three business days. As you can tell, I have been complaining a lot about this shipment and I am at the point where I don't care how long it takes anymore just as long as the package arrives with no absolutely no damage to what's inside. So the question now is: Will I get to enjoy the content of the package before the weekend or will I have to wait till next week?
3/12/2008 Upgrading to NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTIt wasn't as simple as swapping video cards, but I managed to get it done right without a single glitch. Yesterday I bought a new Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT from FutureShop at a good price (which by the way was on sale). When I got home and opened up my Intel Core 2 Quad PC to install the new card into the PCI Express slot, I noticed that there wasn't any connectors left from the power supply. Furthermore, the video card recommends at least a 400 watts power supply and the one I have gave a total of 300 watts only. So in other words it was time to upgrade the power supply as well. FutureShop and BestBuy has a couple of overpriced power supplies so I decided to grab one from a small computer shop near my house. I managed to find a good 580 watts power supply at a reasonable price. So I went back home, removed the old 300 watts and replaced it with a beafier 580 watts. Then I installed the massive Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT and fired it up. Now, I failed to mention that I didn't have a video card prior to this. The whole time I was using the integrated piece of crap graphics chipset that came built into the motherboard. So you can imagine the difference that I will experience. I have to admit, playing Team Fortress 2 now seems like I have never played it before. Everything seemed to come to life. It's certainly a day and night difference. Finally, I am experiencing the game as it should be. Now that my video card is up to date, I can finally grab a game that will definitely run smooth on my PC. I always wanted to try out either Assassin Creed or Crysis. Who knows, I might even grab them both. Both seem to get a lot of good reviews and I have seen numerous gameplays on YouTube and they got me a lot more excited to try them out. So what's next on the upgrade list? Nothing crucial really. But it would be nice to get a large widescreen monitor and maybe upgrading the RAM from 2Gb to 4Gb. But in the meantime, I am certainly quite satisfied with my PC's performance.
